Tobacco use is the leading preventive cause of death in the U.S. Since
smoking and drinking are still a symbol of hospitality among many Asian
American communities, tobacco is a major health concern for this population
in particular.
Some Asian American subgroups are particularly at-risk:
- Persons with
low income and/or low education are more likely to smoke.
- Laotion, Cambodians
and Vietnamese males have higher rates of smoking than do males from
other Asian American countries.
- Pacific Islanders,
especially women and girls, are being targeted by advertisers.
AAHI is
partnering with local Asian community based organizations and individuals
to reduce tobacco use among Asian Americans through education, advocacy
and leadership development.
